Employee break tracking

Track meal and rest breaks.

Employees start and end breaks without clocking out. They can use the same clock or shared kiosk they use to record their hours. Managers review break times and corrections before approving employee hours.

Calculate worked hours

Paid breaks remain in worked hours. Unpaid break time is subtracted from the time entry.

Fix a break

Managers can add, edit, or archive a break without replacing the employee's clock-in and clock-out.

Review a pay period

The break report shows times, duration, paid status, employee, job, and recording source.

Set up, record, and review employee breaks.

Create the break types your workplace uses, let employees record them, and review the results with employee hours.

Set up breaks

Choose the breaks employees can record.

Create meal and rest break types, decide whether they are paid, and add automatic deductions only if your workplace uses them.

Break tracking questions

Common questions about employee break tracking.

  • Meal and rest breaks
  • Paid and unpaid time
  • Manager corrections

Do employees clock out of the shift to take a break?

No. The employee remains clocked in for the shift while Clockspot records the break's start and end times.

How do paid and unpaid breaks affect hours?

Paid breaks stay in worked hours. Unpaid break time is subtracted from the employee's worked hours.

What does automatic break deduction mean?

When an employee clocks out, Clockspot can add a break if the time entry reached the configured threshold and that break type was not recorded. The deduction changes paid time; it does not confirm the employee took the break, so managers should review it.

Can managers correct a recorded break?

Yes. From Time Entries, managers can add a completed break, change its type or times, or archive it. Employees can also submit break corrections through an edit request.

Can employees record breaks by phone call?

No. Breaks can be recorded from the employee Clock page or a registered kiosk. Clocking in and out by phone is supported, but break punches are not.

Does the break report determine legal compliance?

No. The report shows what Clockspot recorded. It does not decide whether a break was required, missed, late, or compliant with a law or workplace policy.
