What this chart gives you

Payroll systems usually store worked time as decimal hours (for example, 7.50 for seven and a half hours). Time cards and punch lists usually show minutes or HH. This tool is a printable minutes-to-decimal chart for a full hour (0–60 or 1–60), plus a live two-way converter.

It does not round punches to 5-, 6-, or 15-minute intervals. That is a separate time-clock policy question under federal guidance.

The basic method

decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60

Then round to the selected precision (2 or 3 decimal places) using ordinary half-up rounding.

The reverse path is:

total minutes = decimal hours × 60

rounded to the nearest whole minute, then shown as HH.

Seven and eight minutes are the usual “why doesn’t this look clean?” cases. They do not divide evenly by 60, so two-decimal display rounds them to 0.12 and 0.13.

For multi-hour totals, use the converter with HH (for example, 7:30 → 7.50) rather than looking up only the minute column.

How to use the chart

  1. Find the minutes past the hour on a time card (or total minutes for a short break).
  2. Read the two-decimal column for most payroll exports, or the three-decimal column if your system stores finer resolution.

Converter field rules

  • 30 means 30 total minutes.
  • 7:30 means 7 hours and 30 minutes (450 minutes).
  • Minutes after the colon must be 0–59.
  • Decimal side accepts values such as 0.5 or 7.5.

Federal wage-and-hour law does not prescribe decimal-hour display precision. Match whatever your payroll provider documents.

What is not modeled

  • Time-clock rounding. Nearest 5, 6, or 15 minutes under 29 CFR §785.48 changes the minutes first. See Time clock rounding rules and the Time Card Calculator for punch-level rounding and weekly totals.
  • Overtime split. Converting 50 hours to 50.00 does not decide which hours are overtime.
  • Break rules or meal premiums. Unit conversion and reference chart only.
  • Pay rates. This tool does not multiply hours by an hourly rate.

Recheck if federal guidance starts prescribing display precision for electronic time records (it currently does not), or if major payroll products change default rounding conventions in a way that should change this tool’s defaults.

How accurate is this?

For pure unit conversion, the math is exact before rounding. Display accuracy is limited only by the precision you choose. Two-decimal payroll displays can reverse to a minute that differs by at most one minute from the pre-rounded value on awkward fractions (7 and 8 minutes are the classic examples); three-decimal mode reduces that display gap.

Frequently asked questions

Why ship a full 0–60 chart when a converter already exists?

Search intent splits: some users want an interactive convert; others want every minute listed for printing or training. One surface can do both without splitting SEO authority across two math implementations—though this folder keeps a local copy of the algorithms so tools stay self-contained.

Why offer both 0–60 and 1–60 ranges?

Some wall charts omit zero as trivial; others include it for completeness. A toggle costs little and matches both printed-poster conventions.

Why copy math instead of importing the decimal-hours tool?

The tools surface is self-contained: tools do not import sibling tools. Duplicating a small pure module avoids package coupling and keeps each tool shippable on its own. Keep both data.ts files in sync when changing conversion rules.

Why is time-clock rounding out of scope?

Rounding changes which minutes count before decimal conversion. Mixing both in one table would hide whether 0.25 means exactly 15 minutes or a rounded punch. Research and the Time Card Calculator own that boundary.
