What this converter gives you

Payroll systems usually store worked time as decimal hours (for example, 7.50 for seven and a half hours). People usually think in minutes or HH. This tool converts either way, at two- or three-decimal precision, and includes a short reference table for common minute values inside one hour.

It does not round punches to 5-, 6-, or 15-minute intervals. That is a separate time-clock policy question.

The basic method

decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60

Then round to the selected precision (2 or 3 decimal places) using ordinary half-up rounding.

The reverse path is:

total minutes = decimal hours × 60

rounded to the nearest whole minute, then shown as HH.

Seven and eight minutes are the usual "why doesn't this look clean?" cases. They do not divide evenly by 60, so two-decimal display rounds them to 0.12 and 0.13.

How to enter values

Minutes or HH field

  • 30 means 30 total minutes.
  • 7:30 means 7 hours and 30 minutes (450 minutes).
  • 0:45 means 45 minutes.
  • Minutes after the colon must be 0–59.

Decimal hours field

  • 0.5 or 0.50 means half an hour.
  • 7.5 means seven and a half hours.
  • Negative values are rejected.

Federal wage-and-hour law does not prescribe decimal-hour display precision. Match whatever your payroll provider documents.

What is not modeled

  • Time-clock rounding. Nearest 5, 6, or 15 minutes under 29 CFR §785.48 changes the minutes first. Use the Time Card Calculator for punch-level rounding and weekly totals.
  • Overtime split. Converting 50 hours to 50.00 does not decide which hours are overtime. Pair with the time card or state overtime tools when pay rates matter.
  • Break rules or meal premiums. Unit conversion only.
  • Pay rates. This tool does not multiply hours by an hourly rate.

When this gets re-reviewed

Recheck if federal guidance starts prescribing display precision for electronic time records (it currently does not), or if major payroll products change default rounding conventions in a way that should change this tool's defaults.

  • Arithmetic identity: 1 hour = 60 minutes. Decimal hours are a unit conversion, not a separate legal definition of "hours worked."
  • 29 CFR §785.48 — Use of time clocks — federal rounding of punch times (out of scope here; cited so the boundary is clear).

How accurate is this?

For pure unit conversion, the math is exact before rounding. Display accuracy is limited only by the precision you choose. Two-decimal payroll displays can reverse to a minute that differs by at most one minute from the pre-rounded value on awkward fractions (7 and 8 minutes are the classic examples); three-decimal mode reduces that display gap.

Frequently asked questions

Why offer both 2- and 3-decimal precision instead of fixing one?

Payroll products disagree. QuickBooks-style stubs often show two places; some manufacturing and professional-services systems keep three. Fixing a single precision would silently disagree with half the audience. The toggle makes the rounding rule visible and lets the user match their system.

Why round reverse conversion to the nearest whole minute?

Pay periods and timesheets are minute-based at the punch layer. A fractional minute (e.g. 7.2 from 0.12 hours) is not a punchable unit. Nearest-minute rounding is the reversible convention most hand calculators and spreadsheet templates use when going decimal → clock time.

Why accept bare minutes and HH:MM on the same field?

Users arrive with either form. "30" from a lunch-break note and "7:30" from a shift length are both common. Separate fields for minutes vs hours:minutes would double the form without improving accuracy. The colon is the unambiguous switch: present → HH:MM, absent → total minutes.

Why is time-clock rounding deliberately out of scope?

Rounding changes which minutes count before decimal conversion. Mixing both in one field would hide whether 0.25 means "exactly 15 minutes" or "a 12-minute punch rounded to the quarter hour." The Time Card Calculator owns punch rounding; this tool owns unit conversion only.
